Gifts of Service are defined as generous acts on the part of an individual, corporation or other organization that benefit New Mexico State University but do not meet federal definitions of a charitable gift. They are very valuable as we work to achieve excellence at all levels of the university. Recipients of these awards can be nominated by any university program. The decision to present a Gift of Service award is made by the Vice President for University Advancement.

Members of the Foundation staff can assist you in making a gift to New Mexico State University. They can visit with you about some of NMSU's most pressing funding needs and advise you on ways to give that will be beneficial to both you and New Mexico State University.

  Tax-Advantaged Giving (return to top)

Gifts to a non-profit such as New Mexico State University are tax deductible as allowed by law based on the tax circumstances of each individual. There are certain gifts that may offer more tax advantages to the donor. An outright gift of appreciated stocks or bonds is exempt from capital gains tax and in most cases enables the donor to claim a charitable income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities at the time of transfer. The deduction is limited to 30% of the donor's adjusted gross income but the excess can be carried forward for up to five additional years. In all cases, donors should consult with their personal advisors about the ramifications of a gift.

IRS Charitable Forms (return to top)

It is best to consult with your personal tax advisor regarding tax ramifications of gifts over $250. For general information visit the IRS web page at http://www.irs.gov/charities/index.html. For questions related to your gifts to New Mexico State University, e-mail us at giving@nmsu.edu.

  Estate Planning (return to top)

For many donors, a gift made through a bequest is an easy way of making a substantial contribution to New Mexico State University. You can make a specific bequest of a piece of property, a sum of money or a stated percentage of your estate or you can designate New Mexico State University as a residuary beneficiary after other specific bequests have been made and all debts, taxes and expenses of the estate are paid. It is always best to arrange these plans with your family's legal advisor. Your gift to NMSU can be directed for any program(s) of your choosing or left undesignated.
