The College of Extended Learning is located in Milton Hall, but extends New Mexico State University's reach beyond traditional campuses,
classrooms, and academic programs to provide a wide range of educational
opportunities for students to meet their academic, professional, and personal
learning goals.
Construction was completed on November 25, 1947. The building came in at a cost of $394,304.68, with assistance from the WPA (Works Progress Administration).
The hall was named for the late General Hugh M. Milton , who joined the college faculty in 1924 as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He held bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Kentucky. Milton was appointed Dean of Engineering in 1926 and became president in 1938. He was recalled to active military duty in 1941 at the rank of colonel, and was promoted to brigadier general in 1945. Milton returned to conclude his tenure as president in 1947. He later headed New Mexico Military Institute and served as Assistant Secretary and Under Secretary of the U.S. Army. He was president of New Mexico State University from 1938-1947.
