The College of Health and Social Services (CHSS) is vital to New Mexico, the border region and beyond. The college includes the Department of Health Science, the School of Nursing and the School of Social Work. Our faculty, staff and students strive for excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community - the three basic principles of the university's land-grant mission. Through these efforts, we equip our graduates with the knowledge they need to make an impact in all of our communities. To assist in this effort, we have identified three areas of emphasis to advance the college:
• establish and maintain contact with alumni and friends
• increase awareness of the college's successes
• promote charitable gift opportunities for the college
Please take a moment to explore the various links and information we have compiled that highlight the college's mission.

Dr. Henry A. Lasch was the founder and developer of the Health Science program and was responsible for requesting and receiving approval for an undergraduate degree in Health Science. His final contribution before retirement was to recommend and successfully obtain administrative approval to establish Health Science as a separate department.
Shortly prior to Dr. Lasch’s retirement, he asked Dr. Savage to take over the department administration. His competent leadership and Dr. Lasch’s nation-wide research study presented to Dean Saunders, Health Science was incorporated into a new college which is now entitled the “College of Health and Social Services.” Without the support of Dr. Jack Saunders, Dean of the College of Education and Dr. Donald Roush, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Health Science might not have included in the new college.
The College expanded rapidly with new programs, the addition of graduate degrees and an increase in faculty specializations. A new building for the College of Health and Social Services was dedicated in the year 2004 and was constructed around Memorial Tower. On May 13, 1946 the Board of Regents agreed to build a memorial tower and clock to commemorate the war dead. Construction began in 1950 and finished in 1954 when a set of Carillion bells were installed. Until the 1978 opening of the Aggie Memorial Stadium, which is just south of the Pan American Center, Aggie football was played in a field directly east of the Tower with the final game being played at that field on November 19, 1977. A tribute to those who served in World II is located on the first floor of Memorial Tower.
