Robert Myers, BS ’58, “re-paid” the Department of Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico State University for the quality education he received here by establishing the Robert Myers professorship in that department. “I remember that the faculty and staff were anxious to see students succeed,” he says, “and the opportunity to work at PSL while a student was a bonus that paid large dividends throughout my career.”

The new professorship will support the department head in the Mechanical Engineering, providing salary enhancements and funds to support research, graduate students and other academic needs associated with this position.

Myers grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque High School. He was the first in his family to attend college. His best memories of his time at NMSU include the lasting friendships he formed. He was honored by the College of Engineering as its distinguished alumnus at Homecoming 2007. Dean Steve Castillo says, “Myers exemplifies the concept of giving back. He supports NMSU’s students and faculty through the generous donations of time and money."

After receiving his degree, Myers worked for the Boeing Company on several projects, including the Bomarc Missile, M-X Missile, Reentry Systems Vehicle, B-1B Bomber, Advanced Cruise Missile, Advanced Launch Cruise Missile, and the Short Range Attack Missile I/II. Later, Myers managed all projects at the Boeing Mojave Test Center. After this, Myers served as the vice president for the Northrop Grumman Military B-2 Stealth Bomber Flight Test Program, and then as vice president for Northrop Grumman Military Aircraft Systems Division Test and Evaluation. He also served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves.

Myers retired from Northrup Grumman in 1998 but still consults with that company. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Air Force Association, Reserve Officers Association, and serves on the NMSU ME Academy and the Engineering Dean’s advisory council. He has received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Space Command Distinguished Service Medal, and the Air Force Academy Distinguished Unit Medal.
